Save a child: learn what makes a toy harmful

Worry about buying the right toy for a baby has always been an issue. Making sure that it was too big for baby to swallow, checking that nothing was loose that baby could pull off and eat, and even making sure that there was nothing sharp, were all part of the mandatory pre-purchase toy check.

Recently, with so many Chinese-made toys being recalled due to safety concerns, checking toys for safety is much more complicated. Reading labels is a nightmare unless you have a dictionary with you at the store. Only a scientist could recognize if some of the products used in toy making are hazardous to a child's health.

That is why it is important to become familiar with the list of known toy components that are hazardous. Fortunately, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a list of tips to help you find your way to buying the perfect toy for the baby in your life. When you have gifts to buy, spend a few moments to check for the latest product recalls and save a child from harm.
