Of the top 20 toy recalls on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website, eight have been recalled due to chocking hazard and 12 due to lead based paint. The items include sports balls, small toys, and, baby books. Even Jo-Ann Stores has recently paid a $50,000 fine for importing and selling toys with lead paint.
So, if even the big chain stores with all their product testing can make mistakes, how is the parent supposed to know what is safe for their child to play with? As hard as it is, parents must become informed about the rules and regulations related to toy safety. First they should not let their child play with a toy unless they have checked it out.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission would be the best place to begin your search for information. You can find toy safety standards, lists of toys that have been recalled, and even information about the number of injury reports related to a toy.
Do not put your children's safety at risk Take the time to be as aware of what they are playing with as you are aware of whom they are playing with.
