How to Check a Baby Toy For Safety

Play time should be fun for babies and their parents, and to ensure that it's safe as well, parents should check all baby toys to make sure they are safe and age-appropriate for their little ones. The US Home Safety Council offers some guidelines for parents to use when checking out toys.

You can use a toilet paper roll to gauge safe toy size. If any of your baby's toys fit inside the toilet paper roll, they are probably a choking hazard. When you are inspecting toys, make sure that there are no broken parts. Search your home for any tiny toys or parts that could pose a choking hazard, and store games designed for older children out of reach of the younger ones. Avoid toys with cords or strings that could become wrapped around a child, and keep latex balloons away from young children. Make sure that all toys you purchase have been safety-tested, and don't allow young children to play with motorized or electric toys.
